In an industry increasingly built around speed, fast production cycles, quick-turnaround manufacturing, and rapid product launches, we've made a deliberate choice to do the opposite for a core part of our formulation process: infusing key botanical ingredients for a full four weeks before they ever reach a finished bottle.
What Cold Infusion Actually Is
Cold infusion is a traditional method of extracting beneficial compounds from botanical materials, herbs, flowers, or resins, by steeping them in a carrier oil over an extended period, allowing the oil to gradually draw out fat-soluble compounds without the use of heat or industrial solvent extraction. It's slower and less efficient than modern extraction methods, but it produces a noticeably different, more complete result.
Why Four Weeks Specifically
Botanical compounds transfer into oil at different rates depending on their chemical structure, some readily dissolve within days, while others require weeks of steady contact time to fully migrate from the plant material into the oil base. Through testing and refinement, we found that four weeks consistently allows for a significantly more complete transfer of beneficial compounds across the range of botanicals we use, rose, frankincense, and others, compared to shorter infusion periods common in faster commercial production methods.
Cutting this process short, as many commercial oil blends do in favor of quicker turnaround, means the finished oil simply contains less of what made the original botanical valuable in the first place, more carrier oil, less of the actual beneficial extract.
Why We Don't Use Heat or Solvent Extraction Instead
Heat-based extraction and industrial solvent extraction are faster methods used widely in the cosmetics industry to speed up the process of pulling compounds from plant material. Both methods come with tradeoffs: heat can degrade certain heat-sensitive beneficial compounds, while solvent extraction requires the solvent to be fully removed afterward, a process that isn't always perfectly complete, occasionally leaving trace residues in the finished product.
Cold infusion avoids both of these issues entirely, no heat degradation, no solvent residue, simply time and gentle, natural extraction. The tradeoff is that it takes considerably longer and produces a lower yield relative to the raw materials used, which is part of why cold-infused oils tend to cost more to produce than commercially extracted alternatives.
What This Means for the Finished Product
Oils and serums built on properly cold-infused botanical bases tend to be noticeably richer in the compounds responsible for their effectiveness, whether that's the anti-inflammatory boswellic acids in frankincense or the antioxidant polyphenols in rose. This is a meaningful part of why we believe Al Iksir performs the way it does, not because of a single "hero ingredient," but because the infusion process itself is done properly, giving each botanical component the time it needs to fully contribute to the final formula.
The Cost of Doing It This Way
Being transparent, this approach costs us more, both in time and in the lower yield that comes from a longer, gentler extraction process compared to faster commercial methods. It would be considerably cheaper and faster to shortcut this process, and most of the market does exactly that. We've made the decision that the resulting quality difference is worth the additional cost and the longer production timeline it requires.
Why We're Telling You This
We think transparency about process matters just as much as transparency about ingredients. A product can list wonderful-sounding botanical ingredients on its label while still using a cheap, fast extraction method that leaves very little of that ingredient's actual benefit in the finished formula. Understanding how something is made, not just what's listed on the label, is part of making a genuinely informed choice about the products you use on your skin every day.
